A treasured Victorian post box has been returned to sender after being temporarily removed from its home of 150 years.

The box, which was previously in a wall adjoining the Old Fire Station on Guithavon St, was taken out by builder Stuart Gardner but he was miffed when Royal Mail told him it couldn’t be returned.

The historical box has now been given back and built into a new wall after Royal Mail initially said it couldn’t be built into private property.

Nearby business owner Rebecca Popham, whose Lettings Solutions business adjoins the post box wall, was relieved at the news.

She said: “It would have been a huge inconvenience for me as a business and for people that live in the nearby residential home to lose it."

Royal Mail spokesperson Sally Hopkins said: “We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused to our customers in Witham.

“The box is now being reinstalled in its original location.”
