Denise Austin says the pond has been allowed to dry up

First published in News by , Reporter

A Witham mum is urging a housing association to tidy up an “eyesore” pond outside her house before it becomes a dumping ground.

Retired Denise Austin, 64, of Forest Road, Witham, feels the land opposite her house has been “left to rack and ruin” for years after it was once known as the jewel in the town’s crown.

Mrs Austin, who has lived in the town for 40 years, first brought up the problem in 2009 but said little has been done to rectify it.

She said: “Now it is full of willow trees because the children have pushed the trees down into it and there is just a tiny bit of water in it."

Do it yourself. What's wrong with willow trees anyway?

I'm not sure you can just fill it up with water but perhaps it is blocked! It is a shame because it used to be nice and ducks would come but it does look a mess now and needs some attention. Perhaps Mrs Austin could arrange a day to get locals to work on it. I'd join in.

James Abbott says...

We are working up a project to restore the pond involving the town council, Witham & Countryside Society and hopefully the Essex Wildlife Trust. It will need the agreement and support of Greenfields CH who own the pond and we will need to source funding because the biggest job will be to excavate the pond to get the silt, etc out. But it would also be great to have a local volunteer team to help look after it going forward.
