Thieves scaled a fence before stealing hundreds of pounds worth of stock from a builders’ merchants.

Police were called by a neighbour with reports of two men loading fence panels into a van in Redwood Close, Witham, at about 10.30pm on May 17.

It is believed the fencing, and other items, were stolen from EH Smith in nearby Forest Road.

The police helicopter and officers on the ground searched the area but no one was found.

EH Smith’s branch manager, Tony Bennett, admitted it was difficult to decipher exactly what was taken from the three acre site.

He estimates timber, wheelbarrows and fencing panels, worth a combined £400, were stolen.

Anyone with information is urged to call Essex Police on 101.
