Two men from Witham were arrested after a football match ended in a violent brawl.

A crowd of 150 spectators watching Witham-based Highfield Victoria take on Heybridge Social were left shocked as a fight broke out on the pitch.

The violence followed the final whistle of the Pope and Smith Chelmsford Sunday Football League’s Coward Cup Final match on Sunday at Heybridge Swifts Football Club.

Paramedics treated two men, one aged in his late teens and the other in his late 60s, for facial injuries.

The Pope and Smith Chelmsford Sunday League had hired the ground for the match.

An Essex Police spokesman said: “Two men from Witham, aged 24 and 27, were arrested on Monday on suspicion of assault causing actual bodily harm at a football match in Heybridge on Sunday.

“Both have been bailed until July 1, pending further enquiries.”
