Leaked documents outlining plans to close Witham’s dump have sparked outcry.

In total, 13 Essex recycling centres have been earmarked for closure, including Witham’s, according to an insider.

Witham residents would instead be asked to use centres in either Braintree, Colchester or Chelmsford.

Maldon Road resident Bob Ward, 67, who led a campaign to safeguard Witham’s dump in 2011, said: “There’s a real demand for the recycling centre in Witham and this will cause a real furore in town.

“People will be furious.”

I don't live in Witham; I don't visit Witham; Indeed I have no desire for any connection whatsoever with Witham; (of course you could change all that 'Bhuddee' dear ha ha) and yet the news of this proposed restriction on access to such an essential public facility near gives me apoplexy.

How can any modern community not have such a public service readily available 'on their doorstep'?

So wrong, so very very wrong!

Braintree District Council prides itself on having an above average recycling percentage compared to other authorities. Making people travel ten miles to get rid of potentially recyclable rubbish will increase the amount sent to landfill.

Knowing how busy the tips get in both Witham and Chelmsford, the latter does not have the capacity to absorb the number of people from Witham.

Unfortunately the "recycling centres" are managed by Essex County Council, who don't have the local focus.

However, the same story appeared last week in BWT's sister paper for the Basildon area, and ECC said it was just a discussion document and no policy had been agreed, so there is hope yet.

Bhudeeka,
I fear you have mis-read this article.
We are talking about the Civic Recycling Centre on Perry Road, Witham.
If you have no car, how have you been able to get there to recycle your rubbish????.
I hope you do indeed dump your rubbish on the street, as that will be classed as a flytip and you will be taken to Court.
Gotcha!

Great, really eco friendly, lets drive further, use more petrol just to dump our waste. As usual we pay the same taxes as Braintree residents and get less and less services for our money!

The tips are run by private firms on behalf of Essex County Council.

We already have restrictions in Witham (closed on Thursday), so perhaps a compromise of keeping it open but further reducing the days (say opening only on Monday, Wednesday, Saturday, Sunday and all spring & summer bank holidays, and also reducing the days at other tips in the county, would be equally viable and fairer to all.

Don’t fall into the trap of condemning others opinions.
Regardless of what, Bhudeeka says, we must stick together and work at this as one.
And not squabble amongst ourselves.
