More than 1,000 homes and businesses were left without power after an electricity fault.

A UK Power Networks spokesman said engineers restored power to 1,143 customers in parts of Braintree and Black Notley after a fault on the underground electricity distribution network at 1.03pm today.

All but 228 customers had power restored within four minutes of the fault.

The remaining customers had their power restored in stages, at 2.05pm and 2.17pm.

The spokesman said: "We realise how difficult it can be to be without electricity and would like to thank customers for their understanding while we worked to restore their power."
