Promotion for play-off chasing Braintree Town would provide a massive boost for the whole district, according to a council boss.

The club are still in with a slim chance of grabbing a place in the Skrill Premier play-off places going into Saturday’s season finale at Cressing Road.

Braintree Council leader Graham Butland said having a club in the Football League would provide a welcome boost for businesses in particular, with more visitors coming to the district.

He said: “Whatever happens it’s been an extraordinary season for Braintree. It’s put the town on the map, there’s no doubt about that.

“It will be a really difficult task for them on Saturday but you never know until the final whistle goes."

To grab a place in the play-offs, the Iron must beat Grimsby on Saturday and hope that Gateshead lose to second placed Cambridge.

Goal difference would then come into play, with Braintree needing a three-goal swing.
