Driver fury as Witham roadworks cause town centre gridlock

Braintree and Witham Times: Driver fury as roadworks cause town centre gridlock Driver fury as roadworks cause town centre gridlock

Angry drivers are demanding to know why two major town centre road schemes have been allowed to take place at the same time.

Essex Highways is carrying out roadworks along the length of The Avenue, in addition to work at the junction of Hatfield Road and Spinks Lane.

Town centre businesses have reported disruption, while residents are having to put up with increased journey times.

Excavation work in The Avenue started last Monday and is due to end on May 17.

An Essex Highways spokesman said: "We appreciate local residents' patience whilst the works continue.

"The works in The Avenue were planned six months ago and due to the condition of the highway, they could not be postponed.”

Good point Optima.

It is WItham.

It also blocks off Avenue Road at the junction with The Avenue.

Yesterday morning there were also temporary traffic lights on Maltings Lane.

The roadworks on the Hatfield Road / Spinks Lane / Bridge Street / Howbridge Road junction are there for four months. The queues in the morning back up halfway up the hill on Newlands Street.

I think that was an edit - the original headline didn't mention Witham (I checked before I replied to Optima).

But you regularly comment on Braintree stories (for example, I remember supermarket deliveries at Sainsbury's getting both barrels from you)

You're correct as at this moment in time Pierre-Pierre; but the original headline said 'Driver fury as roadworks cause town centre gridlock'.

So 'Credit to the BWT crew' for taking heed of readers' comments for once

Have a 'Brownie Point' boys girls God only knows you can do with a few!

Re pierre-pierre's comment above.

Well, if a local parish Councillor in Suffolk saw fit to have an Uzi machine gun and AK-47 assault rifle ready to hand for reasons known only to himself, I wouldn’t be particularly surprised if the leader of our own local BDC was minded to have the odd AS90 or two parked up nearby just in case the ‘lovely person’ who published such ‘kind’ words about him (exactly a year ago yesterday to be precise) in the BWT happened to call by unannounced for tea.

No prizes for guessing which warm and compassionate regular contributor to these threads then described the leader of the BDC as a ‘a greedy horrible pig of a man who should be booted out of council and our lives’.

How blessed we are to have such a genteel sweet angel in our midst……………

To quote my instructor when I first grabbed a cyclic and collective in my sweaty mitts: "The most fun you can have with your clothes on!". He was right! And that was a Hughes 300 only.

So -- cancel the order for the AS90 before I have buyers remorse. I want the Apache!
