Police accused of siding with travellers instead of vulnerable businesses

First published in News

Police have been branded a disgrace by a politician for failing to evict a group of travellers from private land.

A handful of travellers had been occupying land next to an empty unit on the Eastways Industrial Estate in Witham since Sunday.

Essex Police said they had “insufficient grounds” to evict the travellers, but the group left the estate on Tuesday following negotiations with officers.

MP Priti Patel said: “It is disgraceful that the police have stood by and let travellers occupy this site.

“This is not the first time this site has been targeted by travellers and businesses affected rightly expect the police to take robust action to move them on.

“Instead, we’ve seen police officers seem more interested in the rights of the travellers who have illegally occupied this site."

Priti Patel apparently has pretty some ferocious things to say about the Police.

However, this doesn't read like a very comprehensive or balanced report to me.

The only 'facts' in the above article state that the Travellers stopped off at the location on Sunday - that the Police then spoke to them - and come Tuesday they moved on.

No mention of any associated local mini crime-wave. No mention of any piles of rubbish being left behind. No mention of any other anti-social behaviour come to that.

It seems to me (based on what the BWT have said) is that the only uncooperative action on behalf of the Travellers was that they didn't hang around long enough to enable the Police to arrange a full blown heavy handed eviction operation for the benefit of the media.

I do hope Priti was not just taking advantage of this emotive bandwagon as an opportunity to engage in a bit of fortuitous grandstanding.

So, using the acronym 'NIMBY' is a racist slur (at least according to the irrefutable wisdom of Bhudeeka it is) but broadly describing a certain class or culture of people - such as 'Travellers' as filth is OK is it?

Does Bhudeeka actually personally know the people who are the subject of this article and does she have evidence to back up her scurrilous outburst?

I presume she has accrued a full summary of the gruesome details from the victims of this latest occurrence? Maybe she'd like to enlighten us all.

Funny old world...............
