Driving instructor's horror after learner's windscreen smashed by object thrown from another car

Stevie Hicks was with a learner driver when their windscreen was smashed

The damage to the windscreen

First published in News

A driving instructor and his student had a lucky escape when a driver threw something at their car, smashing the windscreen, during a lesson.

Stevie Hicks, of Mayland Road, Witham, and his student, a Felsted School pupil, were driving along Roxwell Road when a man in a grey car travelling in the opposite direction hurled something at their red MINI Cooper Countryman.

The object shattered the outside laminate of the windscreen on the driver’s side leaving a “cricket ball sized” dent and cracks in the glass, causing £800 of damage.

Mr Hicks, who has been a driving instructor for Benson School of Motoring for 11 years, was horrified by the incident.

He said: "It didn’t actually go through the window but as it’s on the driver’s side it was a lucky escape as if it had come through we wouldn’t be talking to you now, we’d be dead.”

Essex Police asked anyone with any information to contact them on 101.

Windscreens do not cost £800 to replace and the report did not say bonnet chipped either.
It might have been an off duty examiner from the DSA in the area. As we have the worse record for pass rates in the area especially Colchester.
I suppose that is one Conspiracy Theorists point of view. (I hope the chap is not one of Mark Cole's Driving Association members which may have added fuel to the issue.
(I hope the Instructor and the passenger are unhurt and doing well, but yes this is not news):
The whole system needs a shake up from Top To Bottom: Obviously people are getting angry as the system has turned into a RIP OFF.
First time pass rates have fallen through the floor. There is so many new instructors on the road, some of them are feeding information back to DSA Testers as to whether the candidate should pass or not. I know one of them who is doing it in Clacton. There is not enough work around between them now so the more you fail the more lessons you will need, failures generate more tests which means more money for OSBOURNE:

I think the whole point of this article is to point out whats happened and how dangerous it was, and how it could have killed someone, the damage isn't a chip made by a car throwing up stone this was deliberately chucked at the school car. stupid comments like that are not needed, how would you have felt if this was a family member or friend?
