Duo steal Braintree man's car at gun point: Police appeal

Braintree and Witham Times: Duo steal Braintree man's car at gun point: Police appeal Duo steal Braintree man's car at gun point: Police appeal

A man is warning others after having his "high-value" car stolen at gunpoint while on a test drive with two people.

Police have issued efits of a man and woman who contacted the victim from Braintree who was selling his car.

The incident happened on March 25 at about 8pm when the owner of the car was met by the man and woman and took them out on a test drive.

The male suspect was driving when he pulled up in the lay-by the Great Leighs race track and pointed a gun at the owner and demanded he got out.

They then drove off.

Police were alerted and the car was recovered in the High Road, Benfleet, early the following morning.

The victim, who does not want to be identified, was left shaken up by the experience.

He hopes that someone will recognises the two people from the efit and contact police. He believes that they could come from South Essex or east London area.

He said: "I would warn anyone who is considering taking a stranger on a test drive to make sure that they get a copy of their driving licence, check their insurance documents and make a note of the registration number of the vehicle they arrive in."

Anyone who recognises the two people is asked to contact detectives at Chelmsford CID on 101, or via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

I would question and be suspicious about anyone who wants to view and test drive a car at 8.15 in the evening, particularly when it's dark!

People who have jobs?

I can't help but find myself more suspicious of buying/selling lower value items face to face with strangers much more now than I used to, although admittedly those are much smaller things, not cars. That said, I don't get why, if you were going to steal a car, you'd go to this much effort and hold someone up at gunpoint, which is a much more serious crime when caught.

Why has it taken nine days to get this information into the public domain?

So much for this supposed Hi Tec world of 'Whiz Bang' IT.

Perhaps we'd be better off reverting to the days of Town Criers!

Come to think of it I reckon that would be a jolly good job for Bhudeeka. Be a mighty fine thing for her to have on her CV as she works her way 'onwards and upwards' along a successful career of voluntary public service.

Oyez! Oyez! Oyez! Ding Dong Ding Dong. Now hear this you 'orrible citizens of BnW. I wants yer to keep yer mince pies peeled for any sign of London Filth so we can all 'ave a luvvly lynching.

The point I was making was why would anyone want to buy and test drive a car in the dark. That would make me suspicious. I'm sure even people who work during the day would not see this as a good idea.

Do WHAT?

I can think of a few choice retorts, but I defer to my friend OMPITA's wordsmithing skills which, once again, perform the task most admirably.
