A NHS trust has assumed control of Braintree Community Hospital.

Mid Essex Hospital Trust (MEHT) officially took over Serco’s contract for running services at the Chadwick Drive hospital last week.

The takeover comes after Serco announced its intention to cut short its agreement with Mid Essex Clinical Commissioning Group (MECCG) in December following anticipate £5million losses and dwindling referral levels.

MEHT chief executive Paul Forden, previously managing director of acute care for Serco, said: “I think it’s great both for Braintree Hospital and Braintree residents but also for Mid Essex Hospital Trust and Broomfield Hospital and its patients.

“It gives us a chance to get the best of both services.

“Braintree has fantastic local access for our patients for diagnostics but equally has day surgery facilities which means we can put more patients through day surgery at both hospitals.”
