Staff and rail users were left shocked and saddened by the death of a pregnant woman who was hit by a train.

The 28-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene of Witham railway station after being hit by a 2.36pm service from Marks Tey to Liverpool Street on Sunday.

The woman had been waiting on platform two shortly before her death.

A British Transport Police spokesman said there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding her death and a report is now being prepared for the coroner.

Strangers have posted tributes on the Times Facebook page to the woman whose name has not yet been released.
