BRITAIN’S infamous driving ban gran has vowed to get behind the wheel again.

Caroline Turner, 79, has been banned from driving for a year after hitting a pedestrian on a zebra crossing and driving on regardless during her latest episode of motoring madness.

Great grandmother Turner achieved national notoriety after sparking a 20 mile low speed chase while driving at just 10mph along the A12 while police officers ran alongside pleading with her to stop.

After her latest court appearance she said: “I have every intention of driving the car again, so there.”

In 2011 Turner was stopped on the A12 near Marks Tey having driven from Frinton at dangerously low speeds.

The Gidea Park resident had been trying to make it the 60 miles back at walking pace.

She was initially banned for a year before the punishment was reduced to eight points on her licence.

During the hour long chase she ignored officers tapping on her window telling them “there is nothing to discuss, I am going home”.

She had already driven the wrong way around a roundabout never reaching speeds of more than 20mph on the A120.

Officers had to keep her in the cells overnight to stop her getting back behind the wheel having been forced to set up a road block across the A12 as the only way to stop her.

Then last month she knocked down a pedestrian in Hornchurch, Essex, in the same blue Ford Fiesta she has become infamous for driving.

She has been banned from driving at Romford Magistrates’ Court and ordered to pay £220 compensation, £295 in fines and a victim surcharge.

And there we have the reason why eye tests should be compulsory from 40, with resitting the test at 50, 60, 70, 75, 80, and annually after that. My father-in-law realised when he was no longer fit to drive, but my own dad went on far too long and eventually hit a cyclist (luckily not seriously). And in case anything thinks I'm targeting the elderly, I'd already have had one resit myself if this was in force.

It's a political hot potato, but I would want compulsory re-testing every 5 years up to age 60, and every 3 years after that. There is always a focus on old people such as this, but there are plenty of people on the roads who really should not be there. Problem is, of course, that there would very quickly be tales of woe from people who are stuck in a village unable to go anywhere.

For this specific case, a way has to be found to keep her off the road, rather than waiting for her to cause an accident. If she has family, hard as it no doubt will be to persuade her, they have to try to convince her just how dangerous she actually is.

My son had his car written off by a Mr Gerry Atrick a few years ago. When he and his mate got out of the car the other car drove off. Fortunately the whole thing was witnessed by an AA van driver, who followed the car and called police to it when it stopped.

Had it not been witnessed, no doubt my son (about 20 at the time) would have been seen as guilty by the police and insurance companies.

The police attended the guilty party, then came to the scene of the accident, (by which time I had been called to come and help). They had the drivers other details but let him go on his way pending speaking to my son, and then visited the elderly driver at home that evening.

The police decided not to prosecute for either careless driving (coming onto a roundabout when there was traffic on it) or leaving the scene of the accident, because the old guy was shaken by the accident and had driven off when my son and his mate got out of their car "because his wife/passenger was frightened of them". However, they did accept liability which made the insurance company process the claim fairly promptly.

Dear Mr Boris,
You are perfectly entitled to call me what you like on this thread and you may also dictate my intelligence level, to your satisfaction.
If you think I am stupid then so be it!
As you are recognised as one of the regular thread posters on this site, your position is respected.
Should you to choose to start discriminating one in relation to their level of intelligence or capability of expressing an opinion, then that is entirely your prerogative and your entitlement.
Where I draw the line is if my wife or my children are insulted or indirectly affected in anyway.
That also means situations or actions going on behind their backs within the community, ie clandestine esoteric activity of a detrimental type or nature.
You and any others can say what you wish without being rude, insulting or causing Harassment, Alarm, Intimidation or Distress.
"Please be my guest".
If you actually think of me in this or that way via my posts, then there is nothing more I can do or state or try to sway your opinion of what I am trying to purvey.

Dear Jack Edward
I am very sorry if Caroline Turner is, as you imply, your wife or daughter. I suppose I should also be sorry for you if you have to share your life with such an arrogant woman.
Nonetheless, this woman's actions have been indefensible, and she is just the sort of person that makes Cassie's Law necessary. She hit a pedestrian on a zebra crossing and drove on!!!! She is a menace to us all.
