A rugby enthusiast who was the youngest ever player to represent Braintree’s first team will be remembered as a devoted family man.

Matthew Wadforth, 42, died last Monday after battling against myeloid leukaemia for nearly two years.

Known as Maff to friends, the dad-of-one helped raise more than £6,000 for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research after his diagnosis.

The former Alec Hunter pupil developed his interest in rugby as he followed in the footsteps of his dad Barry Wadforth, who played for Braintree RUFC in the 1970s.
