A food store has reopened after a £500,000 makeover.

The East of England Co-operative, in The Broadway, Silver End, temporarily shut on January 4 while the works took place. But the revamped shop reopened last Friday.

Cutting the ribbon was Josie Badiuk, who lives in Silver End and worked in both the village’s original Co-operative store in the 1940s, which burnt down in 1951, as well as the existing shop in the late 1970s.

You have the date wrong for the fire of the Co-op Department Store in Silver End; it was 1952 not 1951. Our archives have a copy of the Braintree and Witham Times with the report of the fire. I expect your own archive will also have one.
