Recycling centres may close as part of a review by Essex County Council.
The council currently spends £6.4million a year running 21 centres including those on the Springwood Drive, Braintree, and Perry Road, Witham.
However, it says need for the centres has dropped as kerbside recycling has increased over recent years, while some older sites may be outdated.
A survey of asking residents how they use recycling services was launched last week and runs until Sunday April 20.
It is not known which recycling centres are at risk of closure, but county and district councillor James Abbott (Green, Bradwell, Silver End and Rivenhall) fears any cuts could mark a decline in recycling rates.
