A former Braintree Council chairman who was awarded an MBE for his dedication to the community has died at the age of 72.

Allan Millam, of Trotters Field, Braintree,  died suddenly in Broomfield Hospital on January 18.

He was a district councillor for 35 years, chairman of Braintree Council, chairman for the Tabor Centre for disabled adults in Braintree and also an active member of the tenant board for Greenfields Community Housing.

Mr Millam was married to his wife Barbara, with whom he found “much happiness and support”, for 22 years and had two children, two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

His family said: “Allan will be very much missed by all who knew him.”

Graham Butland, leader of Braintree Council, said: “I always found him to be a thoughtful and caring man, he really made a contribution to the local community.”

Councillor Jacqueline Pell, of the Halstead Residents Association, said: “The Braintree district is going to be a poorer place for losing him.”
