Unbilled gas could cost mum thousands

Baker Way in Witham

Suzanne Stevenson is angry that she will have to budget extra to pay the debt

A mum was shocked to discover that she hadn’t been billed for her gas supply for seven years - and now needs to foot the bill, which could run into thousands of pounds.

When Suzanne Stevenson moved into her home in Baker Way, Witham, seven years ago, she arranged to receive her energy bills from E.ON online and pay by monthly direct debit.

But she has received a letter from the company stating that due to an “oversight” they had not been billing for her gas since August 2006 and she will now have to pay charges for the last 12 months.

Miss Stevenson, who has five children between the ages of one and 13, believed she had been paying for her gas at the same time as her electricity bills and is angry that she will now have to budget extra cash each month to cover the debt.

She said: “I never noticed that they were only taking out the money for the electric. I dread to think how much it is going to be."

An E.ON spokesman said: “We take all of our customer’s concerns very seriously and are sorry for any inconvenience that this may have caused."

I think we are all too well aware that the average IQ of the local population is not particularly high without the need for stories like this endorsing that fact. Is this really news worthy? I think rather than a headline of "Unbilled Gas Could Cost Mum Thousands" maybe it should be "Mum's Expensive Lesson in Household Management".

For once, I actually feel for this woman. She set up direct debits (sensible) and has 5 kids to look after. She thought the bills were taken care of. EON should waive it.

She may well have set up a direct debit but she has clearly not been reading her bills as if she had been she would have noticed she was not paying for any gas.

This has happen all over the new estate not just to one person, gas meter were not register proper,y with eon. There is a lot of people affected and eon are taken on that it's there error, most people have online billing and even if u do look on a eon bill it has elec and gas on there letters even if u only use one supply from them. Eon have caused det due to there oversite on loads of people. If it was you you would just be upset as the baker way residents. You just seem to wanna slate people that are working hard paying bills and looking after kids. God to think what use would be saying if the residents were on benifits.

I give you that one, it is indeed just over 7 years. One small point though, you should have written 'need a lesson in reading too', should have been a double 'o' not single. I think we can call that one all.

I was about to launch into a spirited defence of the citizens of Braintree in response to the unwarranted slight implied in Bridportresident’s attack on their supposed diminutive IQ. How dare the bumpkins of Dorset proclaim such a scurrilously low opinion of our erudite townsfolk I thought to myself?
(Talk about ‘red mist’, I was in such a state they cancelled my monthly trip to see the nit nurse).

Well, that was my intention until I came across Suzie01’s submission. Oops - change of plan! I think I’ll go back to bed instead.

Thank’s Suzie. I’d much prefer a couple of hours shut-eye if the truth were known.

Charlie, be a good chap and wake me when they bring the Friday afternoon tea and sticky buns round.

er...i'll stop you there says...

She's had a touch if they only want her to pay for 12 months out of 7 years worth of gas.

There are ways of paying theses bills in small amounts over a period of time is she cannot afford to pay it all at once.

I think she probably knew but thought she would wing it and then play dumb when they came knocking. I could be wrong, just my opinion. I bet if they were trying to refund her a years worth of gas she would've been on the phone within 5 mins to collect :)

Lesson to all, check your accounts, they're not always accurate - don't bury your head in the sand.

Ouch - That hurt!

When it comes to decorum, Charlie makes Mick McManus look like Charles Hawtrey. I keep pleading with him ‘not the ears’, ‘not the ears’ but it’s no blinking use.

Well, I’m heartened to hear that BPR is an indigenous contributor. Was beginning to think once the ‘Witham mob’ were accounted for, (and of course our friend in far off Alligator Alley), there perhaps weren’t many actual locals left.

Anyway, I told Charlie you were skeptical about whether Suzie was likely to be old enough to be allowed out and about unchaperoned on the Comments Site.

Crikey he went off on one he did! Grabbed his 1930s Whitakers Almanack from the tin trunk under his bed and was thumbing through the pages ranting on about ‘absolutely continuous univariate distributions’; ‘random variables’ and ‘non-negative Lebesgue-integrable functions’.

I must admit he lost me a bit, but when he concluded that as she had five kids it stood to reason that she must be at least eighteen years old and so there was no case to answer. I’m pleased to say that I understood that.

Now where is the warden with those ice packs he promised for my lugholes?
