Sparks rained down on a Braintree street after a dustcart crashed into a telegraph pole.

The collision happened at about 10.50am on Tuesday when the refuse vehicle attempted to reverse down St Mary’s Road and avoid an illegally parked car.

In trying to do so, the dustcart struck and snapped a wooden telegraph pole, sending sparks flying from power lines and cutting off the electricity and phone lines to 40 homes.
