Paintings by a celebrated war artist and illustrator could fetch thousands of pounds as they go up for auction alongside work by his son.

Edward Bawden, who was born in Braintree, worked in graphic art, book illustration, print-making, watercolours and murals.

He was also an official war artists for Britain during the Second World War.

A blue plaque commemorating the artist was installed in 2005 at his childhood home, 11 Woodfield Road, Braintree.

Son, Richard Bawden, followed in his father’s footsteps to become an artist, working in a variety of mediums and exhibiting his work around the country, including at the Royal Academy.

18 paintings by the pair will be auctioned by Sworders, regional auctioneer, in their Decorative Art and Design Sale in their Fine Art Auction Rooms in Stansted Mountfichet on Tuesday.

The watercolours include ‘Audley End Trees’ which could fetch as much as £6,000 and a painting entitled “Ives Farm, Great Bardfield” which has a guide price of £3,000 to £5,000, both by Edward Bawden.

“The Patchwork Cloth” by Richard Bawden has a selling guide of £2,000 to £3,000.
