A widespread police search was carried out after a burglary in Coggeshall.
Police were called at about 5.50pm on Monday following reports of a break in at a home in St Anne’s Close.
An Essex Police spokesman said: “A woman phoned the police after she returned home and found a man acting suspiciously.
“She believed he had been in her house.
“A burglary had occurred at the premises and the rear door had been forced, but it appears nothing had been taken.”
The suspect is described as white, about 5ft 8, of medium build and carrying a bag.
He was wearing a chequered hat, grey jacket and blue trousers.
Police undertook house to house enquiries.
Braintree CID is continuing to investigate.
