Apologies have been made to an angry couple after their appointments at Braintree Community Hospital had to be cancelled at the last minute.

Gerry and Jane Gardiner, of Broad Road, Bocking, said they both attended the hospital in Chadwick Drive for pre-planned appointments within a fortnight, only for their consultants, coming from Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford, not to show up.

Mr Gardiner, 70, had an appointment on January 2, while Mrs Gardiner, 69, was due to see her consultant about a hip replacement on January 8.

A Mid Essex Hospital Trust spokesman said: “Mid Essex Hospitals apologises for the inconvenience caused to our two patients by the cancellation of their clinic appointments.

“The first cancellation was due to an administrative error, with the appointment date not being put into the consultant’s diary for that day.

“The second cancellation was due to the consultant being on call, and this was confirmed to Braintree Community Hospital prior to the appointment date. However, the hospital was unable to contact the patient in time to rearrange the appointment."
