Businesses are upset at a lack of communication after a pedestrian crossing used to access an industrial estate was closed.
The level crossing in Motts Lane, Witham, has been closed while construction work takes place on a new £3.2million bridge over the Great Eastern Main Line.
The crossing was the site of a fatal crash last January, when 30-year-old Michal Majzner was hit by a train while on his way to work on the Eastways Business Park.
Network Rail has announced the crossing will be closed while work continues ahead of the bridge opening in the spring, but businesses on the industrial estate claim not to have been informed.
David Cocker, Witham Industrial Watch estates manager, said: “They are very poor in how they communicate, not only to the industrial watch but the whole community."
