A monthly 100-stall market could be held in Witham town centre if a council agrees to a six-hour road closure.

Negotiations have been taking place in recent months between Witham’s town Community Interest Company (CIC) and a potential market operator.

It is hoped a monthly market could take place on a Tuesday if Essex County Council (ECC) agrees to close Newland Street to traffic.

CIC director Rob Williams said: “The intention is to gather support from all the various groups around Witham.

“Doing it once a month, which would be only eight days a year because you wouldn’t have it every month in winter, is not asking too much, especially if it is just six hours a day, and that is how we will present our case.”
