Street market plan for Witham depends on town centre road closure

Braintree and Witham Times: Witham's market is currently located in Lockram Lane Witham's market is currently located in Lockram Lane

A monthly 100-stall market could be held in Witham town centre if a council agrees to a six-hour road closure.

Negotiations have been taking place in recent months between Witham’s town Community Interest Company (CIC) and a potential market operator.

It is hoped a monthly market could take place on a Tuesday if Essex County Council (ECC) agrees to close Newland Street to traffic.

CIC director Rob Williams said: “The intention is to gather support from all the various groups around Witham.

“Doing it once a month, which would be only eight days a year because you wouldn’t have it every month in winter, is not asking too much, especially if it is just six hours a day, and that is how we will present our case.”

It would need to be held weekly to have any impact. Most market traders have a schedule, and go to the same cycle of markets each week - if this was a monthly Saturday, what would the traders do for income on what would otherwise be their busiest day of the week?

With a bit of clever planning, surely a site can be found that would work on every Saturday without the need to close the roads - how about using the car parks of the two office blocks (Cofunds and Grove houses) which are empty at the weekends, or other office facility car parks such as the NHS building opposite the current market?

Finally, I completed the survey about the market future that was referenced in another recent BWT story and was VERY disappointed at the limited ability to actually comment, and the fact that the survey was more about which supermarket I shop in rather than my use of the market - as if that makes any difference.

Surely blocking the road every saturday wouldn't cause that much chaos?
