Parking problems near Witham train station could be eased after a council agreed to purchase land to create 60 new spaces.

At a Braintree Council meeting on December 16, councillors approved a proposal to buy Eckard House, which adjoins the existing station car park in Easton Road.

The council aims to have the car park open for commuters by November.

Speaking at the meeting, David Bebb, Braintree Council cabinet member for performance, said: “Witham railway station is chronically underprovided with parking spaces.

“At rush hour times it is quite chaotic. We have got an opportunity to resolve this situation by purchasing Eckard House, which is adjacent to the station and very convenient for parking for commuters.

“Accquisition terms have now been agreed with the vendor.

“I believe it makes sound economic sense and will be a very worthwhile investment of council money.”

Braintree Council hopes to complete the purchase and submit a formal planning application by the end of this month.
