Braintree: Major investigation - postie suspended over missing mail

Braintree and Witham Times: Braintree: Major investigation - postie suspended over missing mail Braintree: Major investigation - postie suspended over missing mail

A postman has been suspended following allegations he deliberately prevented letters from being delivered.

The man, based at the Royal Mail delivery office in Lakes Road, Braintree, is under investigation and bosses say they will consider prosecution.

Royal Mail is in the process of returning undelivered items to customers, many of which were sent some years ago and are in some cases missing cash or vouchers.

Reporter Gareth Burton was among those to receive post sent to him in 2011, containing a cheque from his parents.

I also got an empty parcel bag from Debenhams, no invoice or anything and just the standard letter from Royal Mail saying my item had been withheld by an employee! I know the parcel contained perfume I ordered back in September! I also ordered some CD's that never arrived so am assuming they went the same way!

They need to follow their internal disciplinary processes. If Royal Mail decide to report the postie concerned for criminal prosecution (which is likely) then the name will be released at that point.

If there are any doubts as to who is involved, or mitigating factors such as mental illness, then it would be wrong to name and shame at this stage.

4 'items' received so far. One was from 2011, the rest were from last year. All had contents missing. Royal Mail might have considered giving guidance about how to raise a claim with them instead of just sending out a standard apology letter, in the interests of customer service above profits of course.

My wife has had 4 parcels go missing from Braintree Royal Mail within 3 years. Each one had some kind of value, and no trace of them were found. We send stuff from other towns where we work now because it's just too risky.
Scumbag can go sign on and let someone more deserved have his job.

I am amazed to hear this!
The staff at Braintree Royal Mail I know to be the hardest working individuals.
I know of two postmen who had items removed from mail, this would be removed at the main sorting office at Borham or wherever the goods originated. There too many non postal staff are employed.
I trust the men at Lakes Road completely with my mail! I have every trust in them even if one individual has turned out to be bad, and we do not have the full story here!
The postman has walks that are far too big these days, and mail often does not arrive till late in the day. Bad management, too few workers, and poor organisation are at fault for most wrongs. Privatisation, on the cheap, will not help but will naturally increase our costs!
However I still have full trust in our postmen!

I had a card delivered to me last week that was sent in August 2011 to congratulate me on the birth of my baby and the mothercare voucher was missing. I called the number on the standard letter that came with it only to be told there is nothing they can do and im to just forget about it!!!! not really understanding how this is acceptable and how no one noticed this going on earlier.

Bert Hardy - how can you say the walks are too big, when posties are able to complete them within the hours that they are paid for? I know a few posities, and they are upset because what they were able to do until a couple of years ago was to finish their own round, and then do another on overtime rates, whilst still being paid for their own - or alternatively knock off wo or three hours early and still get paid. The overtime is still available but now it has to start after they have completed their normal paid eight hours, just like the rest of us.

Did you know that Royal Mail never report any thefts to the Police?
The only time is if they eventually decide that they want an arrest.
All investigations are kept secret in-house and very few go any further.
Figures obtained from Freedom of Information Royal Mail show that
One member of staff is sacked for offences every day!
Vetting procedures have been proved to be inadequate - one employee had 26 previous convictions, but was still employed!
Identification of criminal activity is abysmal and what's worse , is that Royal Mail seem unable and unwilling to improve their procedures, despite criticism from numerous judges and also Postcomm.

Royal Mail are refusing to give any explanation, or information to recognised victims of this crime. Braintree Delivery Office have not been answering any phone calls for at least past 3 days and Royal Mail Customer Service have been unhelpful, obstructive and dismissive.
It is a shame for the many honest and friendly postal workers that we all know, that they are affected by these all too frequent occurencies and bad press, and it must be frustrating to know that their management let such things to happen right under their noses, allow to go undetected literally for years, and then nothing happens to the culprits except perhaps losing their job! I have seen the official figures for dishonest staff - but what about the number who simply leave or are asked to leave? Of the proportion of staff who actually handle the mail (rather than the TOTAL number of employees always quoted by RM), the proportion is alarmingly high.

Called customer services today after receiving an empty birthday card envelope from 2009 addressed to my daughter...we are still missing cards from 2012 and 2013 For her too....The girl from RM was very unhelpful curt and very quick to defend the company and all it's employees. There must be overwhelming evidence for a criminal prosecution. I hope photos or a log was made of all these empty parcels/envelopes before sending them out to us poor souls

My lost parcel, sent in September 2011 from Denmark, seems to have been stolen from the mail. The law allows that mail can be stolen or delayed, both offences. To have been delayed the post must still arrive, albeit late.
I cannot claim compensation from Royal Mail because the parcel was sent from Denmark. I don't know where my parcel contents are or even if Royal Mail care that I have lost them. Are they still in the culprit's possession? Do Royal Mail have them? Will I ever see them?
Unless the case is prosecuted in court I cannot seek a compensation order.
Perhaps I shall take Royal Mail to civil court.

We already received 3 items back (two cards - one of which had a gift card missing and an invoice for a DVD). The scum that did this by the looks of it also with held junk mail, as we have received items for previous occupants of our property, that had no value. We are still missing a cheque, not the end of the world, as the original was cancelled and a new one sent, which was then received.

I'd love to sit down with the person responsible and ask why they felt the need to do this to us.

Did you read the follow-up article this week in which Royal Mail proudly showed our local MP some security cameras?! Did Mr Newmark really accept this as being adequate to deter stealing, and also to identify the thieves? I would hope that he responded with some pretty probing questions for the management there. I would like to know whether they are manned full-time, or if not, that the footage is minutely monitored? What is the use of cameras if you don't do anything about what they capture!! It would be interesting to know how long they have had these cameras, because the stealing has been going on for years! What a great investment they were!
