Braintree: Tesco Express opening planned for spring

Braintree and Witham Times: Braintree: Tesco Express opening planned for spring Braintree: Tesco Express opening planned for spring

Tesco hope to be able to open an Express store in a former pub early next year.

The supermarket chain has submitted plans to convert the former Kings Head pub, in Coggeshall Road, Braintree.

The proposed store could create 20 new jobs, but more than 400 residents have signed a petition, organised by a nearby post office, opposing the development.

An application for an ATM and security bollards for the site was withdrawn by Tesco this month.

It had originally been anticipated that building work would begin in October, but this has been delayed.

A Tesco spokesman said: “The council have advised that we need to resubmit some of the applications because the store's extension is being built.

“We will submit the plans shortly.

“We look forward to serving the local community by offering convenience and choice as well as providing local jobs.

“We hope to open the store in spring next year.”

I think they should be focusing all their efforts on to sorting out their Marksfarm store and employing more staff up there rather than opening ANOTHER Tescos down the road!!!!!!!!

And how many of the four hundred plus protesters would be prepared to sign an affidavit declaring that they will never use the store once it's open for business?

Excellent idea; local jobs will be good.

Did the protesters use the pub? Or are they just complaining as a normal 'all change must be stopped' brigade?

dont know where you live jack,
but the proposed Tesco express is half way between the Marks Farm Tesco Superstore, and the Town Centre Superstore, both are less than 1 km on a flat road and estimate walk time only 15 minutes

and it is only less than 100 metre from the existing stores on Cressing road

20 jobs when Sainsburys were offering 400
This store will stop anyone close by using the town centre Tescos and hence any other shops there too so how's that protecting the town centre economy mr and mrs councillor?

Look, you all need to realise something that is blindingly obvious -- were you to think it through: it is an "Express" store. It is NOT a substitute for the full blown shops in town or at Mark's Farm. In addition, if the local post office shop can't compete, then tough luck. Change your practices, your business model - tap into something that Tesco doesn't or wont provide.

All those transplanted mockneys that used to frequent the King's will no doubt moan that their watering hole (emphasis on the latter word) is no more but will indeed frequent Tesco and take advantage of their lower prices, fresher food and wider selection.

I don't agree with Tesco Express opening so close to other stores but they will offer a wider range of fresher food. I don't get what One Stop is worrying about, they have the post office which tesco express won't have so I can't see them losing to much business. Tesco want to take over Braintree and it is clear that the council are allowing it to happen its sad but what can we do to stop it?

Just have to say, Tesco express won't be opening with a wider range of food, they sell exactly as the superstores do and their prices are slightly higher than the superstores!!! So you do the maths! Would you rather carry on walking to town or funny farm sorry Marksfarm and get the same shopping there for cheaper??! I would.

Sorry Sttrawberry, but they have a much smaller range than the superstores. On holiday earlier this year I used a couple of Tesco Express stores, and couldn't find everything that I wanted.

That's what I said??? They normally have a freezer dairy produce grocery bakery and sometimes non food section. Mostly the same products which are sold in the superstores at slightly higher prices. I'm a Ex Tesco employee both of superstore and express x

I'd use the local express for the smaller items I wanted:who really cares about a penny a pound difference when you've got to spend time to drive in to town or wherever. Plus the cost of petrol and, were one to be foolish enough to pay, parking at Sainsbury's!

I meant it will have a wider range of fresh food than what One Stop has to offer, they sell pretty much stale bread, no fresh fruit or veg and a small amount of anything else. You clearly don't shop in the one stop.

'Convenience stores'? Has a nice ring to it I think -- if a little strong on the transatlantic influence. Not quite the corner shop(s) anymore though, are they? Anyone remember Billy Beard (across the road from the Jubilee Oak ... Huh. Anyone remember the Jubilee Oak for that matter?) or Mrs. Pease a little ways up?
