Armed police were called following concerns for the welfare of a man in his 20s.
Officers attended Church Street, Braintree, in the early hours of yesterday morning after the man contacted the ambulance service.
Police then continued their enquiries at an address in Lancaster Way, Braintree, but left the scene at 10.30am.
An Essex Police spokesman said: “They were stood down when it became clear no firearms were involved.”
The man has been detained under the Mental Health Act.
