A bride missed her own wedding reception and honeymoon after “disaster struck” when she was taken to hospital with appendicitis.

The family of Jenny Hughes assumed it was just the usual wedding day nerves when the she began feeling sick and feverous before her wedding on Saturday.

The 26-year-old struggled through her vows at St Michael’s Church in Braintree and made it to The Bull Hotel in Halstead, where she tried to greet guests until no longer being able to stand up.

Within hours her condition had deteriorated and her worried groom Ian Thorpe called an ambulance.

Jenny had been taken into hospital with a grumbling appendix in June but doctors initially feared it could be ovarian cancer.

After tests she underwent surgery to remove her appendix on Sunday.

The couple and their two children, Molly and Oscar, had been due to go on honeymoon to Cornwall on Monday and it is hoped they may be able to go for a few days next week.

Jenny’s twin sister Katy Hughes, who was a bridesmaid, said: “I am absolutely gutted.

The family are now trying to recreate the wedding reception at a party on November 15 and have already raised hundreds of pounds.
