Braintree district: Church towers could provide broadband solution

Church towers could provide the key to ensuring village communities can access better broadband services.
Essex County Council (ECC) has pledged millions of pounds to extend coverage across the county by 2016.
But village churches are preparing to step in to provide broadband to those communities who will miss out on the upcoming investment.
The Revd Julie Nelson, priest-in-charge of All Saints Church in Rayne and St Mary and St Christopher’s Church in Panfield, believes churches are ideally placed to fill the gap in service.
The Diocese of Chelmsford, which covers Essex and East London, is working in partnership with a specialist rural broadband provider.
The height of some of Essex’s 500 church towers could prove ideal for transmitting wireless broadband to hard-to-reach communities.
