Braintree: Full steam ahead for new community centre
1:00pm Tuesday 15th October 2013 in News
Volunteers who are set to open a new community centre within months are hoping to reach their last fundraising target.
Trustees of the Archer Community Centre are trying to raise in the region of another £30,000 to fully equip the new East Street building.
Building work began three weeks ago on the site, which was donated by Paul Archer, 77, whose family ran the Archer’s drink company in Braintree.
He also donated thousands of pounds to help kickstart the work and in July the trustees were awarded a £100,000 grant from The Veolia Environmental Trust.
They had since raised a further £10,000 which was needed for work to begin.
Trustee Trina Whittaker said: “It is exciting.
“I went there last week and I couldn’t believe what had been done in so little time.
“It is really taking shape.”
It is hoped the roof can be put on the building next month and that the hall could open in the new year.
The trustees have already commissioned a survey of community groups and believe more than 20 will be interested in using the site.
Anyone who wishes to donate to the project is asked to email email@example.com
