Braintree: Council offers rate relief to businesses
11:00am Monday 14th October 2013 in News
Braintree Council has set aside £100,000 to support growing businesses and attract new jobs into the district.
The business rate relief scheme approved at the council's cabinet meeting on September 30, and gives the authority the power to issue discretionary aid to businesses that apply and meet specific criteria.
Councillor David Bebb, Cabinet Member for Performance and Efficiency, said: "Business rates are paid on all non-domestic properties in the district, but are not set by Braintree District Council.
"However the Localism Act which came into force recently does give us some power to reduce business rates if it is deemed to be positive for taxpayers and complies with state aid rules."
