Witham: Schools insist parents must follow guidelines on absence
9:00am Friday 11th October 2013 in News
Parents who take their children on holiday during term time are being fined by their schools.
Schools have the power to hand out penalty notices if children are taken out of school for more than five days or during key exam periods.
The amount of offences increased by more than a third in 2012/13 compared to the previous school year.
Last year seven fines were handed out at Templars Primary and Nursery School, in Cressing Road, Witham.
Headteacher Kerrie McGrory said: “I am mindful of the fact holidays are expensive during the school holidays but that cannot be given as a reason and I have to follow the guidelines that are set."
