Witham: Campaigners call for crossing in Kelvedon High Street
1:00pm Wednesday 9th October 2013 in News
Campaigners calling for a lollipop lady crossing have been left baffled after being told it could cost more than £40,000.
Tony Franchi, 72, of Swan Street, Kelvedon, is calling for a crossing patrol at the junction of his road and the High Street.
He says up to 40 secondary schoolchildren cross there to catch buses to and from schools in areas such as Colchester and Coggeshall.
He said: “We do need a crossing person, even if it is just at peak time when the children are crossing.
“It is inevitable someone is going to get knocked down, it is just a matter of time.
“I was told that the admin costs for a crossing person is £45,000 per year, I find that unbelievable.
“I have done a bit of research and the wage is about £12 per day and that works out less than £4,000 per year, it just seem completely out of context to say that a crossing person costs more than £40,000.”
Mr Franchi collected 40 signatures from schoolchildren, who cross the road at that point, while they waited for the bus on Monday morning.
He believes a zebra crossing would be the best solution but has been told it would be against the rules as it is too close to the junction.
