Witham: Where would you rather see new homes built ask frustrated landowners
5:00pm Friday 4th October 2013 in News
Where would you rather see homes being built?
That is the question being posed to Witham residents by Chris Bailey and Martin Addison after Braintree Council allocated their land and the rest of the Chipping Hill Industrial Estate for employment use only.
Mr Bailey, of Chipping Hill, Witham, and Mr Addison, owner of the adjacent Ramsden Mills carpet superstore, claim the allocation is unnecessarily restrictive and are angry the council has refused to reconsider, despite their protests.
Mr Bailey, whose garden is affected, insists he is not saying the land should definitely be transformed into housing but believes it is foolish to rule it out, especially in favour of building on greenfield sites.
Cllr Lady Newton, Braintree Council's cabinet member for planning and property, said: “The pre-submission site allocations and development management plan, which was agreed by full council on September 23, identifies that this site is considered appropriate for business, general industrial and storage and distribution use.
“A further six week public engagement period on the plan will be announced shortly."
