Witham: Do you want a community hospital?
1:00pm Thursday 26th September 2013 in News
A community hospital could be on the cards for Witham after it was dubbed the “Cinderella town” of health services.
About 100 people attended a special Braintree Council meeting on Monday evening as future development in the district was discussed.
Councillors approved the Pre-Submission draft of site allocations and the Development Management plan, after debating numerous amendments.
The documents map out how the district will be developed up until 2026.
They earmark sites for specific uses such as housing, employment and retail development and will be used to help decide future planning applications.
At Monday’s meeting councillor James Abbott tabled an amendment to the district’s development plans calling for healthcare improvements for Witham and the surrounding villages, including building a community hospital, to be treated as a priority.
The pledge was passed despite opposition from some councillors such as cabinet member Joanne Beavis and Iona Parker, who claimed Witham should not be given “special treatment.”
Mr Abbott said: “It was very concerning to hear there was basically no major proposals for healthcare on the back of the very significant proposals for development in the town."
