Braintree: Council unlikely to scrap benefits for newcomers
2:00pm Saturday 21st September 2013 in News
Braintree is unlikely to scrap benefits for newcomers to the district, despite concerns that Essex is becoming a dumping ground for London benefit migrants.
Colchester Borough Council is currently consulting on making changes to its council tax benefit scheme after Tory activists said only people who had lived there for at least five years should be able to claim.
Tendring Council brought in the policy in April amid concerns over the number of people moving in from outside the area, specifically the number of benefit claimants.
It has been claimed that poor London residents in some boroughs are being given financial incentives to move out of the capital.
