Witham: Broadband campaign hopes for upgrade
1:00pm Thursday 12th September 2013 in News
Witham industrial estates have been left with slow broadband because an upgrade would not be profitable for BT.
Campaigners who have been asking for fibre broadband to be installed will now have to wait and see if their nearest connection cabinet will be upgraded in an Essex County Council scheme.
The owners of Venture Display, in the Waterside Business Park on the Eastways Industrial Estate, is leading the campaign for better broadband and have been in touch with MP Priti Patel and both the district and county council.
But BT has written to Ms Patel explaining that the upgrade would not be “commercially viable.”
The telecoms giant explained it is putting £11.7million into a deal with Essex County Council and the Government’s Broadband Delivery UK, which will each pay £6.46million, to improve speeds and said Witham could benefit from this.
It pledged to highlight the Witham issue to the project team but said it will depend on which areas are given priority under the scheme.
Speaking about the campaign Ian Oliver, a developer at Venture Banners, said: “We seem to have rattled a few cages at least and made a bit of noise but it is a little disappointing they haven’t considered our cabinet worthwhile because at the end of the day we are part of two big industrial estates.
