Braintree: John Ray Infants to relocate 14 miles away until November
5:17pm Thursday 5th September 2013 in News
Pupils will be attending lessons at a site 14 miles away for nearly two months following a fire which destroyed a school.
Staff and pupils at John Ray Infants School will relocate to the former site of Takeley Primary School, near Bishop’s Stortford.
Children will be taken by free coaches to Takeley each morning from the John Ray site in Notley Road, Braintree.
Year 1 and 2 pupils will start lessons on September 18, followed by reception classes on September 23.
Parents and children will have the chance to do the coach journey together ahead of the start date.
While pupils are being taught in Takeley, portacabins will be installed and furnished on land at neighbouring John Ray Junior School and Notley High School.
The work will take about two months to complete, and it is hoped lessons will resume in Braintree on November 4.
Essex County Council is working to secure a contractor for the permanent rebuilding of the school, which it estimates will be completed by September 2015.
Sandra Way, headteacher at John Ray Infant School said: “I understand parents may be anxious about pupils having to travel to a location outside of Braintree and appreciate it is a very unsettling time for our very young pupils.
“However, given the circumstances this is the safest and quickest way to ensure children don’t miss out on their education.
“The assembly on Monday will give parents the opportunity to ask any questions about the proposals and I hope to be able to reassure them.
“A school is not about its buildings, it is about the ethos, teaching and support that is at the heart of a school, and I can guarantee this will not change no matter where we are teaching your children.”
An assembly for parents and pupils takes place on Monday at Notley High School to run through plans.
The assembly will take place at 9.30am for Years 1 and 2, 12noon for foundation stage, and 6pm for those parents unable to attend during the day.
