Braintree: Teen sails the Essex Coast with Dame Ellen MacArthur
6:00pm Sunday 1st September 2013 in News
A brave teenager sailed the Essex coast with Dame Ellen MacArthur.
Sam Dore, 16, of School Road, Rayne, set off from Bradwell-on-Sea along with 10 other teenagers to sail to Brightlingsea and back as part of the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust event.
The former Notley High Pupil finished treatment for the rare cancer, Advanced Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma, in 2010 and has since taken part in two sailing trips with the trust.
The trust helped to develop his love of sailing and Sam is now hoping to begin a course in February to allow him to make a career out of it.
He finished the five day trip, on board a 1906traditional spritsail Themes Barge Thalatta, on August 10.
He said: “I have enjoyed sailing a new type of boat, which was different to when I did ‘Round the Island Race’ and the first sailing trip.
“It has been good to have a chat and see what other people have been through.
“It’s a good way of getting over it.”
The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust was set up in 2003 to give young people recovering from cancer the chance to rebuild their confidence through sailing.
