Braintree: Couple issue warning after rogue trader botches resurfacing works
3:00pm Saturday 31st August 2013 in News
An elderly couple are warning people to be on alert after they were allegedly conned into paying more than £300 for botched resurfacing works.
Keith and Freda Harknett claim they paid a man £320 to resurface a parking area outside their home in Stephenson Road, Braintree, with bitumen - a commonly used road and paving material.
Once finished, the area initially dried, but the couple were distraught when they woke up last Thursday and discovered the heavy rain had turned the surface into what they described as “half an inch of slurry”.
The couple reported the incident to trading standards at Essex County Council.
Cllr Roger Walters, cabinet member for trading standards, said: “Our advice is not to agree to have work carried out on your house or garden without researching all options first.
"It is always best to get two or three quotes from reputable traders which you can consider in your own time without pressure.
"Try to use a Buy With Confidence business as they have been audited and approved by Trading Standards."
