Braintree district: Grant means fun pack summer for Mencap scheme

Youngsters enjoyed action packed holidays after a grant helped to safeguard a much loved summer school.
About 30 of them went to sessions as part the Mencap Play and Activity Respite Scheme and visited places such as the Natural History Museum in London and the Sea Life Adventure in Southend.
It had been feared the month long scheme, for those with learning difficulties aged between five and 19-years-old, could be in jeopardy this year but volunteers secured a £10,000 grant from the Big Lottery Awards for All fund.Play scheme manager Tina Fitton said: “We would have managed to do something [without the grant] but it wouldn’t have been as varied and as many days.
“Really the grant has given them a fun packed holidays, and apart from the when they are going to places like the Natural History Museum they are also learning.
“It just allows them to be children and have fun and do what their main stream peers would be doing with support.”
The grant also meant the Braintree branch of the charity did not have to dip into savings to run the summer school and so has safeguard the running of the Saturday sessions, which run during term time, until Easter.
