Witham: Family, friends and even strangers gear up for charity skydive
3:00pm Thursday 29th August 2013 in News
A mum will be joined by more than 30 friends, family and other volunteers as she takes to the skies to raise money for charity.
Jodie Barden’s daughters Ella, six, and Chloe, three months, have both been diagnosed with life-limiting premature ageing disorder, Cockayne Syndrome.
The family recently returned from Paris, where Ella was able to fulfil her aspiration of climbing the Eiffel Tower as she had set out in a bucket list.
The trip was funded by The Jeremy Kyle Show after they appeared in a special episode focused on inspirational mums.
On Sunday, Mrs Barden, of Speedwell Close, Witham, will be joined by 37 other willing participants for her latest fundraising attempt - a 15,000ft skydive in Suffolk.
The challenge has been organised to raise funds for Amy and Friends – a charity supporting children with Cockayne Syndrome and their families.
Mrs Barden said: “Me and my cousin said that we’d do it originally and then I said I’d get the hubby and a few others involved but as soon as I put it up on Facebook they just came rolling in.
“There are even a few people we don’t know who have signed up.”
She added: “I’m hoping if everybody can raise about £100 we can raise about £4,000, which would be brilliant.”
Among the volunteers is 41-year-old Alyson Varrow, of Ploughmans Lane, Great Notley, who had wanted to take on her next adrenaline-fuelled challenge since going hovercrafting for her 40th birthday last year.
Mrs Varrow, who runs the Food Delight burger van in Braintree town centre with husband Tony and hopes to raise about £200, said: “I’ve never actually been in an aeroplane so I think it will be a good experience and help raise money for an excellent cause too.”
