Braintree: Couple left distraught after tax blunder
5:00pm Sunday 1st September 2013 in News
A distraught couple were taken to court and threatened with bailiffs after a clerical error made it appear that they were behind on council tax payments.
Debbie, 53, and merchandising manager Ray Sparkes, 52, were devastated to return home from a four-month stay in Vietnam for Mr Sparkes’ work to find letters telling them they had been found guilty at Chelmsford Magistrate’s Court of not paying their full council tax payments to Braintree Council and were being threatened with bailiff action.
The couple went straight to the council to iron out the mistake.
Mrs Sparkes said: “It took them only 10 minutes to work out what they had done wrong.
“Why did nobody check before taking us to court?”
