Braintree: Mum-of-eight jailed for false benefit claims
9:00am Wednesday 21st August 2013 in News
A mum-of-eight has been jailed after falsely claiming more than £135,000 in benefits.
Michelle Solomons, 37, of Windermere Drive, Great Notley, had failed to declare she had been living with her partner Edward O’Doherty since September 2003.
She was given a nine-month prison sentence on Friday after being found guilty of nine fraud charges last month.
Chelmsford Crown Court was told Solomons was motivated by a desire to ensure the money was spent on her children, rather than by financial gain.
Solomons feared the money would be “squandered on alcohol and other matters” if Mr O’Doherty had access to it.
