Braintree: Thousands of pounds paid out in school compensation claims
9:00am Tuesday 20th August 2013 in News
A pupil launched a compensation claim against their school after they were injured when their clothes caught fire in a science lesson.
The incident, which took place at Alec Hunter Humanities College, in Stubbs Lane, Braintree, is one of 79 claims lodged by staff and pupils at Essex schools in the past three years.
The school was found not to be at fault and no pay-out was made.
Essex County Council (ECC) has paid out more than £75,000 after it was found to be liable in 14 of the cases.
Other claims include a child at White Court Primary School, in Ennerdale Avenue, Braintree, who claimed for £30,505 after they were assaulted by another pupil.
In this case, which took place in June 2011, ECC was able to successfully deny liability and did not pay out.
