A council has been criticised after banning the public from highways meetings.
Essex County Council (ECC) has issued a new guide outlining how each district’s local highways panel (LHP) should be run.
Under the regulations, the press and public will not be allowed to attend, and parish councillors will no longer be allowed as members.
Braintree district’s panel currently comprised of four county councillors, four district councillors and four parish and town councillors.
New guidelines state the public can only attend meetings if permission is granted by the ECC cabinet member for highways and transportation, Rodney Bass.
James Abbott, leader of the Green Party group on the county and district councils, said: “There are no less than 63 pages of wisdom, directing in huge detail what these local panels can and cannot do."
