An ambulance has been gutted as it burst into flames after turning into an industrial estate with smoke billowing out of it.

Fire crews were called to Freebournes Road, in Witham, at 12noon today to reports of an ambulance on fire.

Two crews from Witham fire station attended the scene and put the fire out by 12.25pm.

An Essex Fire and Rescue spokesman said: “Firefighters were called to a Thames Ambulance Authority Ambulance on fire. The vehicle was 100 per cent alight.

“Crews wearing breathing apparatus used two hose reels to extinguish the fire.”

Members of the ambulance crew remained at the scene of the fire this afternoon while the vehicle awaited recovery.

A Thames Ambulance Authority spokesman said: “There is no comment at the moment because we are waiting for the ambulance to be recovered and an investigation to take place”.

The spokesman was unable to confirm if the ambulance was carrying a patient at the time of the incident.
